Head of Humerus
Caput humeri
Morphology
Smooth, hemispherical articular surface directed medially, superiorly, and slightly posteriorly. Articulates with the glenoid cavity of the scapula.
Muscle & Ligament Attachments
Enclosed by the glenohumeral capsular ligament. Rotator cuff muscles insert on adjacent tubercles to secure it in the glenoid fossa.
Clinical Correlate
Avascular necrosis (AVN) can occur following displaced fractures of the anatomical neck due to disruption of ascending branches of the anterior humeral circumflex artery.
